Spirited Machine unintentionally crosses boundaries among many electronic music genres. Whether this is due to innovation or a lack of a signature 'sound' is up to the listener. While heavily influenced by Dark Electro, Industrial, and EBM, the music has managed to stay away from the "pseudo-aggressive" attitudes, as one reviewer put it, that are often associated with those genres. The ability to keep from falling into a stereotype such as that is what sets SM apart from the rest. New material starts to venture into darker territory, but without sacrificing SM's unique sound.
